I’ve been writing about our adventures in pieces because these first few days of our honeymoon are so fast pace. I’m stealing this time waiting in line for the Catacombs of Paris. We are packing so much in, we probably should have packed more comfortable shoes. By the time we finished with Westminster Abbey on Friday, we had already walked 5-6 miles and taken several subway rides. Our next stop was Buckingham Palace, even just to see from the outside.
The park around the palace was definitely worth walking around, and several kiosks offered drinks and snacks and lawn chairs to rent.
After seeing the palace we were in desperate need of a beer, and food. We had found this pub online searching for the “oldest pub in London.” We’re not sure if it actually the oldest pub in London, but it dates to 1546 and was good enough for us. It’s tucked away in an alley, which is a little hard to find, but worth the effort.
The pub was bustling but the staff were super friendly. They served traditional British pub food and snacks, like nuts and sausage rolls and toasties. For drinks, we tried traditional cask ales. We weren’t sure what they were at first, but the staff was patient enough to explain it to us. Apparently, the ales are brewed the same as other beers, but the method of tapping and serving the kegs is different. Instead of using CO2 they use a siphon method to hand pump the beer through the tap.
Exhausted, we finished our day with sticky toffee pudding from the hotel restaurant and a bottle of wine.
